The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) has announced new civil service exams open for application this month, with opportunities across maintenance, public safety, engineering, and more.
New York City’s civil service exams open the door to numerous opportunities within various city agencies. Whether you’re interested in technical work, skilled trades, or operational support, there’s a position that matches your skills and passions.

Highlights of July’s exams include:
Automotive Service Worker – Accepting Applications Through 7/21
Automotive Service Workers, under direct supervision, perform repairs and automotive maintenance services such as preventive maintenance, inspection, battery service, checking, servicing, patching and changing tires; lubrication and oil change; clean, wash and polish vehicles; clean interior of vehicles; dispense gasoline and oil; check the level, and refill automobile fluids such as coolant, oil, transmission and brake fluids; assist in performing tune ups, in shops and on the road, and in replacement of engine parts, drive-trains, transmissions, steering gear and components, ignition, heating and cooling systems; operate motor vehicles to test repairs; may operate a tow truck when duties require; maintain and update vehicle service and repair records. All Automotive Service Workers perform related work.
Assistant Electrical Engineer – Accepting Applications Through 7/21
Assistant Electrical Engineers, under supervision, perform electrical engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility; may supervise subordinate employees. They engage in research, investigations, studies or examinations related to the engineering functions or activities of a department or agency; prepare designs, plans, contract and working drawings, contract specifications and other technical specifications, and estimates of quantities; review electrical engineering plans and designs for compliance with NYC codes. All Assistant Electrical Engineers perform related work.
Emergency Medical Specialist – Accepting Applications Through 8/7
Emergency Medical Specialists – EMTs, under general supervision, perform tasks such as the following: provide timely, professional, pre-hospital emergency medical care/Basic Life Support (BLS) to anyone who requests/requires it; provide transportation to the appropriate medical facility; operate department vehicles; receive, prioritize and dispatch calls for emergency medical assistance; and provide patient care under the authorization of the Medical Director. Emergency Medical Specialists – EMTs also prepare and submit reports as required and may be assigned to work in any FDNY facility, as needed. All Emergency Medical Specialists – EMTs perform related work.
Traffic Enforcement Agent – Accepting Applications Through 8/25
At Assignment Level I, under supervision, Traffic Enforcement Agents patrol an assigned area in order to enforce laws, rules and regulations relating to movement, parking, stopping and standing of vehicles. They prepare and issue paper and electronic summonses for violations; prepare and issue summonses to vehicles and motorists; testify at administrative hearing offices and court; report inoperative or missing parking meters and traffic conditions requiring attention; prepare required reports; operate a motor vehicle; and operate portable and vehicle radios and other electronic equipment. At Assignment Level II, under general supervision, in addition to performing the duties described under Assignment Level I above, Traffic Enforcement Agents perform traffic direction tasks such as the following: direct and control traffic at assigned locations, maintain the efficient and safe flow of vehicles and pedestrians. All Traffic Enforcement Agents perform related work.
