Stargazers on the High Line are invited to a special, “once in a quarter moon” opportunity to learn about the wonders of the night skies directly from experts from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope team, as part of the High Line’s weekly partnership with the Amateur Astronomers Association, on July 7, 2026, from 7 – 9:30pm. Team members from the James Webb Space Telescope, the world’s premier space science observatory, will be on-site with exhibits about the telescope, astrophysics, and recent scientific discoveries. The Webb Telescope exhibits will be on hand alongside telescopes provided by the Amateur Astronomers Association, offering high-powered views of the celestial bodies visible beyond the urban haze of New York City. The Amateur Astronomers Association anticipates breathtaking views of the Summer Triangle and the double star Albireo, as well as Venus and sunspots visible through telescopes.
Taking place on the High Line at Little West 12th Street between sunset and park closure, the program is free and open to visitors of all ages, no experience necessary. Stargazing on the High Line is offered every Tuesday through October 27, 2026, weather permitting. Stargazing on the High Line is subject to cancellation due to overcast conditions or inclement weather. Please check thehighline.org for updates regarding cancellation and more information.
Launched in 2021, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is the world’s premier space science observatory. Webb is solving mysteries in our solar system, looking beyond to distant worlds around other stars, and probing the mysterious structures and origins of our universe and our place in it.
ABOUT THE AMATEUR ASTRONOMERS ASSOCIATION
The Amateur Astronomers Association was organized in 1927 to promote the study of astronomy, by offering free night sky and solar observing, weather permitting.
In addition to their sidewalk outreach, they provide economical classes in astronomy to members, sponsor free lectures, visit NYC schools at no charge to teach kids about our universe, and produce our own newsletter, Eyepiece. Lastly, they offer a podcast, AAA Sky, available on all popular podcast platforms.
The Amateur Astronomers Association has been hosting weekly observing sessions on the High Line since 2009.
ABOUT THE HIGH LINE
The High Line is a public park on the West Side of Manhattan operated, maintained, and funded by the nonprofit conservancy Friends of the High Line. Through our work with communities on and off the High Line, Friends of the High Line is devoted to reimagining public spaces to create connected, healthy neighborhoods and cities.
Built on a historic, elevated rail line, the High Line was always intended to be more than a park. You can walk through the gardens, view art, experience a performance, enjoy food or beverage, or connect with friends and neighbors—all while enjoying a unique perspective of New York City.
Nearly 100% of our annual budget comes through donations. The High Line is owned by the City of New York, and we operate the park under a license agreement with NYC Parks.
