The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) has announced new civil service exams open for application this month, with opportunities across public safety, finance, engineering, skilled trades, and more.
New York City’s civil service exams open the door to numerous opportunities within various city agencies. Whether you’re interested in frontline service, technical work, or program support, there’s a position that matches your skills and passions.

Highlights of January’s exams include:
Police Officer – Accepting Applications Through 1/15
Police officers perform general police duties and related work in the New York City Police Department, including connecting and building relationships with the community. They patrol assigned areas on foot or in a vehicle to prevent crime; apprehend suspects; intervene in situations involving crimes in progress, complaints, or emotionally disturbed persons; respond to and investigate accidents; safeguard and voucher property; issue summonses; interview witnesses, victims, or complainants; handle cases involving juveniles and vulnerable populations; and may be assigned to crowd control for major events. They prepare reports and testify in court. All police officers perform related work.
Electrical Engineer – Accepting Applications Through 1/27
Electrical engineers, under general supervision, perform supervisory work or other work in electrical engineering. They plan and review the work of subordinates, prepare progress reports, engage in, or supervise research or examinations; supervise the basic design plan; oversee major projects for construction, remodeling, maintenance, or repair of public works, structures, or installations, prepare designs, plans and contracts; supervise the conducting of construction inspection operations; participate in the supervision of the operation and maintenance of an electrical plant. May operate a motor vehicle. All assistant environmental engineers perform related work.
Accountant – Accepting Applications Through 1/27
Accountants, under supervision, perform professional accounting work of moderate difficulty and responsibility internally in city agencies or in conducting field audits and investigations; work independently or with others in executing responsible accounting assignments following prescribed rules of procedure. All accountants perform related work.
School Safety Agent – Accepting Applications Through 2/3
School safety agents patrol designated areas of school buildings and surrounding areas; identify unlawful or prohibited items through scanning; request identification of, and remove from the premises, any unauthorized persons; aid sick and injured persons and call for medical, police, or fire assistance; notify supervisors of emergency incidents; respond to altercations swiftly and resolve conflicts; monitor security camera systems; apprehend persons violating rules and notify administrative personnel; prepare reports and testify in regard to violations; monitor and use radios to request assistance from co-workers; and may operate motor vehicles. All School Safety Agents perform related work.
Correction Officer – Accepting Applications Through 3/4
Correction officers, under supervision, maintain security and are responsible for the care and custody of sentenced and detained inmates within New York City correctional facilities. They supervise inmate meals, visits, recreational programs, and other congregate activities; inspect assigned areas for conditions which threaten safety and security; conduct searches in order to detect contraband; complete forms and reports; maintain appropriate logbooks; observe inmates and make recommendations concerning medical and/or psychiatric referrals; enforce security procedures in accordance with department guidelines; verify identification of inmates; and perform related work.
