New York City’s civil service exams open the door to numerous opportunities within various city agencies. Whether you’re interested in frontline service, technical work, or program administration, there’s a position that matches your skills and passions.

Highlights of December’s exams include:
Police Officer – Accepting Applications Through 12/15
Police Officers perform general police duties and related work in the New York City Police Department, including connecting and building relationships with the community. They patrol assigned areas on foot or in a vehicle to prevent crime; apprehend suspects; intervene in situations involving crimes in progress, complaints, or emotionally disturbed persons; respond to and investigate accidents; safeguard and voucher property; issue summonses; interview witnesses, victims, or complainants; handle cases involving juveniles and vulnerable populations; and may be assigned to crowd control for major events. They prepare reports and testify in court. All Police Officers perform related work.
Assistant Environmental Engineer – Accepting Applications Through 12/23
Assistant Environmental Engineers, under supervision, perform environmental engineering work of moderate difficulty and may supervise subordinate employees. They oversee small units engaged in environmental and/or fire protection engineering related to design, construction, inspection, and testing; conduct research, investigations, pilot studies, and environmental sampling; prepare drawings, specifications, and cost estimates; check shop drawings; evaluate installations and make recommendations; review plans for compliance with codes and regulations; and confer with engineers, architects, and other professionals. They may operate a motor vehicle. All Assistant Environmental Engineers perform related work.
Industrial Hygienist – Accepting Applications Through 12/23
Industrial Hygienists, under supervision, conduct safety and health investigations to ensure compliance with federal, state, and city environmental and occupational health and safety regulations. Their work supports the protection of workers and the public from exposure to harmful agents. They may operate a motor vehicle. All Industrial Hygienists perform related work.
Plasterer – Accepting Applications Through 12/23
Plasterers, under supervision, prepare and mix plastering materials; apply plaster to walls, ceilings, piers, and columns; tape and repair sheetrock; set up and work on scaffolding; interpret and work from plans and specifications; keep records; supervise assigned personnel; and may operate a motor vehicle. All Plasterers perform related work.
Reporter/Stenographer (DA) – Accepting Applications Through 12/23
Reporter/Stenographers (DA), under general supervision, perform difficult and responsible stenographic work using a stenotype machine. They take verbatim statements from witnesses, complainants, and defendants; record and transcribe grand jury testimony; prepare materials for court proceedings; may appear in court to attest to accuracy; and maintain detailed records, files, and stenographic notes. They may supervise other personnel. All Reporter/Stenographers (DA) perform related work.
