Historic Drag King Competition Series Concludes with First-Ever “King of Drag” Champion
Revry, the world’s first LGBTQ+ streaming network, announced today that King Molasses has been crowned winner of “King of Drag” Season 1, the first-ever drag king competition series.
After six episodes of fierce competition, King Molasses emerged victorious from a field of ten talented drag kings, including Alexander the Great, Big D, Buck Wylde, Charles Galin King, Dick Von Dyke, Henlo Bullfrog, King Perka $exxx, Pressure K, and Tuna Melt, making history as the inaugural champion of this groundbreaking series.
Hosted by comedian, actor, and trailblazer Murray Hill (HBO’s Somebody Somewhere, Hulu’s Drag Me to Dinner), “King of Drag” premiered on June 22, exclusively on Revry, to rave reviews. More than 200 watch-parties were held nationwide and across the globe including Taiwan, South Africa, and Brazil, where enthusiastic fans tuned in to watch the series.
“King of Drag” showcased the unique talents of America’s top drag king performers, featuring comedy, unconventional performances, and timely commentary on masculinity that has been part of the drag king subculture for decades.
“I want my reign to establish our credibility as artists,” King Molasses exclusively tells Entertainment Weekly in their first coronation interview. “We’re always going to be compared to drag queens, but I want my reign to put to bed the ambiguity about what a drag king is.”
The series expansively represented drag while promoting inclusion, authentic self-expression, and diverse gender identities. Unlike drag queens, drag kings present outsized expressions of masculinity in their performance, and “King of Drag” puts a spotlight on the trans masc, cisgender women, and non-binary talents that embody the art form.
The show was co-created by two of Revry’s Co-Founders, CEO Damian Pelliccione and Chief Content Officer Christopher J. Rodriguez, and co-produced by Revry and The Silo (producers Jeffrey Simon and Matt Andrews of Revry’s Vogue ballroom sports franchise, The International Vogue League).
“King Molasses exemplifies everything we hoped to showcase with ‘King of Drag,'” said Rodriguez. “Their talent, authenticity, and dedication to their craft made them a standout performer throughout the season. We’re thrilled to crown them as our first-ever King of Drag,” added Pelliccione.
Throughout the competition, King Molasses impressed “The Kings Court” of regular judges including Tenderoni, Sasha Velour, Wang Newton, Gottmik, and Pelliccione, as well as celebrity guest judges including actress Lisa Rinna, Bridesmaids director Paul Feig, Oh, Mary! Tony award winner Cole Escola, Drag Latina’s Carmen Carrera, and Murray Hill’s Somebody Somewhere co-stars and Emmy nominees Bridget Everett and Jeff Hiller.
“King of Drag” is one of the most ambitious original programs Revry has ever developed, giving the drag competition format a fresh and original approach by focusing specifically on the artistry and unique talents of drag king performers.
The complete first season of “King of Drag” is now available exclusively on Revry.com. The series was proudly sponsored by e.l.f. Cosmetics, a brand that stands for every eye, lip and face by encouraging self-expression and empowering others.
