New Content Featuring Prominent Latino New Yorkers

New Program, VOCES NYC, Airing Now on NYC Life Channel 25 and NYC Media Website, on.nyc.gov/VocesNYC 

NYC Media, the official broadcast network and production group for the City of New York and part of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME), and Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network (HITN), the largest Spanish-language Public Broadcasting Network in the US, are proud to announce a partnership to bring new video content in both English and Spanish language to New Yorkers. The partnership features:

• Episodes of the Spanish-language program VOCES to air on the NYC World Channel 73 beginning Fall 2025.
• A new English-language program, VOCES NYC, available as six interstitials that centers on the lives and careers of prominent Latino New Yorkers, currently airing on NYC Life Channel 25 and available on the NYC Media website.
• A compilation special episode of VOCES NYC to air Sunday, July 20 at 12:30pm with an encore presentation on Wednesday, July 30 at 7:30pm.

VOCES NYC, a new edition to the VOCES program catalogue with a focus on NYC, is hosted by award-winning journalist Jeanine Ramirez and features actress Bianca Marroquín; Chancellor of NYC Public Schools Melissa Aviles-Ramos; MTA Transit veteran José LaSalle; The NY Yankees’ senior interpreter Marlon Abreu; shop owner Radamés Millán and CUNY professor Miguel Perez.

VOCES, a Spanish-language series honoring the US Hispanic community produced by HITN, will begin airing episodes in Fall 2025 on NYC World Channel 73. NYC World, part of the NYC Media network suite of channels which includes NYC Life, NYC GOV and NYC Drive, currently offers almost 50 hours of Spanish-language programming weekly for the 2 million Spanish-speaking New Yorkers residing in NYC.

“We are proud to present VOCES in partnership with NYC Media. We created this series to spotlight influential voices from every borough of New York City Hispanics. VOCES highlights the fields where our communities’ contributions make a lasting impact and celebrates how Hispanics shape the city in many ways every day,” said Michael D. Nieves, President and CEO of Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network (HITN).

“As a Latina, I’m extremely proud to highlight the enormous contributions of my community in making this city the greatest in the world. Voces NYC serves as a cultural showcase featuring prominent and passionate Latinos representing every industry,” said Jeanine Ramirez, host of VOCES NYC.

“42% of our students identify as Latine, and I am proud to be a part of this series celebrating Latine New Yorkers and the ways they uplift our neighborhoods, students, and city at large,” said Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles Ramos.

Subjects of the VOCES NYC episodes include:

• Bianca Marroquín is a Mexican musical theatre actress who made history as the first Mexican woman to star on Broadway with her debut as Roxie Hart in the 2002 revival of Chicago. Over two decades, she’s alternated between the lead roles of Roxie and Velma, and won a Helen Hayes Award for her performance on Chicago’s third national tour. Beyond Chicago, she’s appeared as Daniela in In the Heights, portrayed Mary Poppins in Disney’s Spanish-language production, and served as a judge on Univision’s Mira Quién Baila.
• Melissa Aviles-Ramos is the 32nd Chancellor of New York City Public Schools, overseeing the largest public school system in the U.S. A Bronx native and former English teacher, she served as Deputy Chancellor for Family and Community Engagement, launching NYC Literacy Hubs and Project Open Arms, which enrolled over 45,000 new students. She holds a BA from Fordham, an MA in English Education from CCNY, and advanced leadership certificates from the College of Saint Rose.
• José LaSalle was appointed in September 2022 as the MTA’s first Acting Deputy Chief of Weekend Service Diversions and Coordination, also known as the “Weekend Service Czar” to improve weekend subway operations and rider communication. A 29-year NYC Transit veteran, from subway conductor to general superintendent, he coordinated the L train project in 2019–20 and managed a weekend ridership record of 2.36 million. In June 2021, he was recognized for heroic action when he used a flashlight to alert an oncoming train and help rescue a woman who had fallen onto the tracks.
• Marlon Abreu is the Yankees’ senior interpreter, a Dominican former IT staffer whose advocacy after the 2014 Michael Pineda pine tar incident helped make team interpreters mandatory across MLB in 2016. He provides full translation services to players like Aroldis Chapman and Gary Sánchez, while offering on-call support to others such as Gleyber Torres when they need help with specific terms. Abreu continues to bridge language gaps in the clubhouse, ensuring clear communication and cultural support for Spanish-speaking players.
• Radamés Millán is the founder of San Germán Shop in Williamsburg, a cultural hub offering traditional Puerto Rican foods, clothing, and candies. His store celebrates and preserves Puerto Rican heritage in New York City, serving as a gathering place for the diaspora community. Through curated products and community events, Millán fosters cultural connection and pride among New York’s Puerto Rican population.
• Miguel Perez is an adjunct professor in Journalism & Media Studies at Lehman College, CUNY, and a former chair of the program. A veteran journalist, he founded the “Hidden Hispanic Heritage” website to recover overlooked Spanish contributions to American history. In 2015, he was inducted into the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Hall of Fame, honoring his lifetime impact on journalism and representation.
