The Museum of Modern Art’s annual Party in the Garden on June 3 will honor Glenn D. Lowry, the David Rockefeller Director, MoMA, celebrating his legacy and impact throughout his 30-year tenure at the Museum. The After-Party, which will take place in MoMA’s Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden and The Modern, will be highlighted by a special performance by Role Model and DJ sets by Rae Sada and Gale Scott. Both events benefit MoMA’s general operating fund, supporting its award-winning Learning & Engagement programs and the care, study, and exhibition of the Museum’s collection.

Details on purchasing Party in the Garden tickets and tables and After-Party tickets are available online. Press must request access to attend.

Honoree

Glenn D. Lowry became the sixth director of The Museum of Modern Art in 1995. He has overseen the physical transformation of the Museum’s campus through two building campaigns that have more than doubled the size of MoMA’s galleries, quintupled its endowment, created an education and research center, and inspired a new model for the presentation of modern and contemporary art. Lowry has championed innovation, both onsite and online, to grow MoMA’s annual visitation to nearly three million in the galleries and 35 million across moma.org. He expanded the Museum’s curatorial departments with the addition of Media and Performance, and supported MoMA’s intellectual growth by creating new research programs like Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives (C-MAP).

In 2000 Lowry led the merger of MoMA with the contemporary art center PS1, and in 2015 he worked with Thelma Golden to introduce a joint fellowship program with the Studio Museum in Harlem for rising professionals in the arts. He is a strong advocate of contemporary artists and their work and he has lectured and written extensively in support of contemporary art, on the role of museums in society, and on other topics related to his research interests.

Lowry is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a resident member of the American Philosophical Society. He has been honored by the French government with the titles of Officier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, Chevalier de l’Ordre de Mérite, and Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 2019 the Japanese government honored Lowry with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon.

Born in 1954 in New York City and raised in Williamstown, Massachusetts, Lowry is married to the former Susan Chambers, with whom he has three children. He received a BA (1976) magna cum laude from Williams College, an MA (1978) and a PhD (1982) in the history of art from Harvard University, and honorary degrees from the College of William and Mary and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Performers

Role Model’s been in love. He was so in love he wrote his entire debut album, Rx, about it. But not all romances last forever, and the 28-year-old’s grieving of that same relationship is at the center of his sophomore album, Kansas Anymore. He began the project in 2022 but, faced with the ending of a formative relationship, he scrapped much of this early work. On his own and reinspired, he started anew, collaborating with Noah Conrad, Ian Fitchuk, Scott Harris and Jonah Shy to craft Kansas Anymore — a folk-tinged, lyric driven album featuring 13 songs including “Oh Gemini” and “Deeply Still in Love.” After performing the songs live on his No Place Like Tour, which sold over 90,000 tickets globally, Role Model was moved to share four new songs that further detail his journey. They appear on the album’s deluxe edition, Kansas Anymore (The Longest Goodbye). He performed “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out” – one of the new tracks – on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” as it began climbing the radio charts. As rough as it’s been to ride the roller coaster of heartbreak and homesickness, Role Model feels a sense of pride — and closure — having turned a personally heavy season of life into something that might move others.

Rae Sada is a Cuban-Sicilian DJ, model, and Roc Nation + Interscope alum who operates at the intersection of fashion, art, and sound. Sada was born and raised in the Lower East Side, and has deep roots in music, fashion, and NYC culture. Her genre-blurring, high-energy sets are built to move culture as much as they move a crowd. From global fashion weeks to curated events, she has collaborated with brands such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Miu Miu, and Calvin Klein, to name a few.

Born and raised in Saint Ann, Jamaica, Gale Scott has an unmistakable style and infectious vibe that reflects her upbringing, culture, and deep dedication to living with unapologetic authenticity. Scott was exposed to—and taken by—music from an early age, absorbing references from gospel to reggae, and emulating icons like Grace Jones and Sade. Scott’s musical style is soulful and spirited, spanning generations and cultures with a desire and intention to tell a story while honoring the influences that came before her.
