LockerNYC, a Pilot Program Launched in April, Provides Free Public Delivery Lockers on Sidewalks That May Be Used To Send and Receive Packages

The Program, in Partnership With GoLocker, Now Includes Four New Lockers on Sidewalks and Free Access to GoLocker’s Network of Locations During the Holiday Shopping Season

Over 5200 LockerNYC Reservations for Secure Package Pickup and Drop-Off Have Been Made Since the April 2024 Launch of Pilot Program

The expansion of LockerNYC, New York City’s free, secure public delivery locker program was announced. The program allows New Yorkers to conveniently receive and send packages using lockers on public sidewalks. Ahead of the holiday shopping season, LockerNYC now includes lockers across all five boroughs, including four additional locker locations on public sidewalks and indoors. For the first time, users will also have access to the full GoLocker network, the company whose lockers are being used in the pilot. At least 2.5 million packages are estimated to be delivered citywide every single day during the holiday shopping season. New Yorkers can sign up for free and manage orders on NYC DOT’s website.

Since the LockerNYC pilot program launched in April, New Yorkers have already made over 5,200 reservations for secure package pickup and drop-off. The LockerNYC pilot program is designed to cut down on package theft by offering secure delivery locations, and to consolidate package deliveries at centralized locations. Large delivery trucks are often high-polluting and can present safety risks for pedestrians, cyclists, and everyone who shares our busy streets. Centralized deliveries can reduce the high volume of delivery truck traffic.

The program is available to anyone who is interested and, unlike other delivery lockers, the LockerNYC program serves multiple delivery carriers, including UPS, DHL, and Pitney-Bowes. To ensure security, all locker locations are equipped with security cameras, LED lighting, and anti-theft mechanisms on locker compartments.

Curb Management Action Plan

The City of New York’s LockerNYC pilot is part of NYC DOT’s efforts to reimagine freight delivery in New York City, restructure freight distribution, and create a sustainable last-mile delivery system for getting goods where they need to go.

Just last month, NYC DOT announced the agency has begun implementation of the ‘Smart Curbs’ program on the Upper West Side. The program, announced last year, will implement and evaluate new treatments and regulations to improve safety, reduce congestion, create vibrant and clean public spaces, support orderly local deliveries, and more.

Earlier this year NYC DOT also announced the first pilot locations and rules for the ‘Microhubs’ program that will establish safe, dedicated spaces for truck operators to transfer deliveries onto safer and more sustainable modes of transportation for the last leg of delivery, including e-cargo bikes, handcarts, and smaller electric sprinter vans.

Demand for curb space in New York City – from trash collection and bike lanes to truck loading and parking – is increasing and NYC DOT is responding to address these new demands. ‘Smart Curbs ‘, ‘Microhubs ‘ and the broader Curb Management Action Plan, released in September 2023, are efforts to address the dynamic community needs of today while better preparing the city’s streets for the future. These efforts build on the core tenets of the ‘New ‘ New York panel’s action plan, which identified public space as a key force for the city’s economic recovery.
