Family photography has marked the history of photography as the SLR camera and the 35mm reel became common consumer items. Four American photographers have made it the matrix of their work, between long-term documentary reporting, daily chronicles, and bittersweet fables. Their names are Marianna Rothen, Meryl Meisler, Peggy Levison Nolan, and Shelby Lee Adams. The “American Families” exhibition brings them together on the walls of the gallery from March 22 to May 25. Polka is happy to include them among their represented artists.

Meryl Meisler has two families. She grew up on Long Island in a Jewish family that was as wacky as it was eccentric. By day, Meryl chronicles this clan with humor and tenderness, testifying to the joyful exuberance of a community that has lived in the memory of pogroms and the Shoah. At night, she joins her adoptive family, who find themselves behind the doors of the famous Studio 54, the iconic New York nightclub.

Curated by Indira Cesarine, the exhibit will open on March 15, 2024, with an artist reception, and will be on view through March 29, 2024.

Additionally, the exhibition will debut a captivating series of photographs by the renowned nightlife photographer Meryl Meisler, documenting Skye’s intriguing life at the House of Yes.
