—Immerse yourself in a Month-Long Fiesta: NYC’s Tourism Organization Unveils a Vibrant Calendar of Events for Hispanic Heritage Month 2023—
New York City Tourism + Conventions, New York City’s official destination marketing organization and convention and visitor’s bureau for the five boroughs of New York City, proudly announces an electrifying array of nearly 40 events in commemoration of National Hispanic Heritage Month. From September 15th to October 15th, the city with 2.4 million Latinos will pulsate with a rich tapestry of traditions, inviting residents and visitors alike to immerse themselves in an unparalleled cultural celebration.
National Hispanic Heritage Month is a significant occasion that honors the contributions of the Hispanic community to American culture. It serves as a bridge between diverse groups, highlighting historical milestones and fostering connections across borders. This month celebrates the impact of Hispanic individuals on American history and culture, emphasizing their traditions, art, language, and customs. The increasing number of visitors from Spanish-speaking Latin American countries to New York City, projected to reach 1.9 million by the end of this year, further underscores the importance of this month. This influx of visitors not only boosts tourism but also exemplifies the enduring cultural exchanges that continue to enrich both sides of the connection. Overall, National Hispanic Heritage Month is not only a tribute but also a dynamic representation of the evolving relationship between the Hispanic community and American society.
“Visitors and New Yorkers alike will be captivated by a diverse lineup of events and experiences that embody the lively essence of Hispanic heritage – -from the deeply moving beats of Latin jazz to art exhibitions, parades, theater performances, and soul-enriching concerts,” stated Fred Dixon, CEO of NYC Tourism + Conventions. “Our dedication lies in delivering a fresh and unique experience that vividly portrays the multifaceted facets of Latino culture.” He concluded.
Diversity and unity converge in this celebration as NYC Tourism showcases the authentic Latino experiences that add depth to New York City’s cultural identity. With a carefully curated selection of events that spotlight folklore, cuisine, and artistic expression, the organization is dedicated to fostering an environment of cultural understanding and appreciation. Picasso: A Cubist Commission in Brooklyn
September 14th, 2023 – January 14th, 2024
Upcoming at The Met Fifth Avenue, Gallery 830
1000 Fifth Avenue
New York, NY 10028
In 1910, Pablo Picasso began a decorative project for artist and collector Hamilton Easter Field’s Brooklyn residence. Picasso’s task was to create up to eleven panels for Field’s home library, marking his initial venture into large-scale decorative painting. He aimed to blend his innovative Cubist style with challenging proportions and formats. Despite producing figure and still life compositions from his French studio, the commission was never executed. The exhibition sheds light on this lesser-known facet of Picasso’s Cubist period, exploring its connection to decorative art and architectural space. Displaying six surviving canvas panels, related artworks, and archival material, the exhibit delves into this uncompleted project’s significance.

“Bernarda” portrays a period of Spanish history where women were oppressed, and their growth and choices were restricted. The pervasive matriarchy in place was as strict as the discipline in the army, causing women to be subdued and leading to the near disappearance of feminism, as well as fostering repressed and unhealthy emotions.
Additionally, “Bernarda” explores modern theater and borrows from the Japanese Kabuki tradition. Theatrical elements such as masks, nudity, music, and choreography enhance this performance, earning it a place as one of Havanafama’s most ambitious productions.

Upper Manhattan on Audubon Terrace on the west side of Broadway between 155th and 156th Streets
Penetrable is open to the public for free and will be on view at the Hispanic Society Museum & Library until further notice.
Soto, a visionary artist from Venezuela, played a pivotal role in the development of Kinetic Art in Paris during the 1950s and 1960s, as well as in the Geometric Abstraction movement in Venezuela. Soto’s iconic Penetrables are sculptures composed of vertical cascading tubes hanging in space, into which spectators are invited to enter and roam through. The sculpture is meticulously constructed from iron, aluminum, and yellow plastic tubes arranged within a steel grid. According to Untapped, guests are absorbed into the piece as they wander through the cascading tubes and are made to feel as if the boundary between the sculpture and themselves is blurred. From an outsider’s perspective, those wandering through the sculpture become part of the art.
