In late July, Caramoor continues its summer season with three high-profile performances.
On July 16, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, led by Yue Bao, will be joined by one of classical music’s most passionate and committed artists, Hélène Grimaud, for a program of Gabriela Lena Frank’s Elegía Andina, Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G and Brahms’s Second Symphony. The afternoon concert is preceded by a conversation with Yue Bao.
Then on July 20, pianist and composer Conrad Tao, “the kind of musician who is shaping the future of classical music” (New York), performs a program with choreographer-dancer Caleb Teicher, about whom the New Yorker says: “Mixing super-charged energy with tossed-off charm, Teicher is among the more promising figures in tap dance.” The pair come from two art forms, each with their own traditions and practices, but their collaboration explores the connections between them and the different ways the percussion of piano and tap relate to one another. This program, entitled COUNTERPOINT, is a dynamic interplay of piano and tap dance.
Finally, on July 23, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra — recognized as “America’s leading historically informed ensemble” (New York Times) — led by conductor Richard Egarr performs Handel’s Acis and Galatea at Caramoor. This 1718 pastoral opera remains one of Handel’s most popular dramatic works. Some of opera’s most revered voices, including tenor Nicholas Mulroy, soprano Hera Hyesang Park, tenor Isaiah Bell, bass-baritone Dashon Burton and countertenor Daniel Moody, join in this fully costumed production. The afternoon presentation is preceded by a lecture with MIT Professor Emeritus and Handel scholar Ellen T. Harris.
