High-Quality, Affordable Summer Arts Classes Now Open for Registration at Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning

Open House Set for Saturday, July 8, 12 Noon

Registration is now open for the summer semester of Arts Classes at Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL), located at 161-04 Jamaica Avenue. To get a preview of the classes, JCAL will also host an Open House on Saturday, July 8, 12 Noon, where each of the professional Teaching Artists will provide free demonstrations for all visitors.

The summer semester will kick off the following Saturday, July 15, with a diverse lineup of offerings, including Acting, Ceramics, Comics and Animation, Comics and Cartooning, Drawing and Painting, Fashion Design, Piano, Storytelling, Voice—and “Imagination Inventors,” in which a time machine will be created!

High-quality and affordable visual and performing arts classes and workshops for youth, adults, families and seniors are a cornerstone of JCAL’s year-round programming.

Summer 2023 Arts Classes at JCAL

Acting

Stimulate, excite and inspire your creative self. Students engage in theater games and improvisation as a basis for exploration. Saturdays: 11:00am-12:00pm; 12:00-1:00pm

Ceramics

Introductory course designed to give students a hands-on educational and artistic experience using the medium of clay. Saturdays: 11:30am-12:30pm; 1-2:30pm. Tuesdays: 6:30-8:00pm

Comics and Animation

Create stop-motion cartoon animation, including traditional hand drawn cel animation, white board animation, cut paper animation, flip books, claymation, and object animation. Saturdays: 12-1:00pm

Comics and Cartooning

Students learn drawing techniques that allow them to create original characters. Every student will take home a finished comic book at the conclusion of the class. Saturdays: 11am-12pm

Drawing and Painting

Learn fundamental elements of drawing and painting with pen and ink, watercolor, painted-paper collage, printmaking, and acrylic and tempera painting. Saturdays: 11:30am-12:30pm; 1-2pm; 2-3pm

Fashion Design

Learn the fundamentals of fashion design, including fashion illustration as well as machine and hand sewing. Saturdays: 2:30-4:30pm. Wednesdays: 6:30-8:30pm

Imagination Inventors

Build incredible sculptures of fantasy inventions such as robots, spaceships, futuristic cars—and time machines. Saturdays: 1-2pm

Piano

Take this keyboarding class for an intensive 12-week semester, with classes for both beginning and intermediate piano students. Saturdays: 11am-12pm; 12-1:00pm; 1-2:00pm; 2-3:00pm

Storytelling

Perform true stories from your own life onstage for an audience. This class covers writing. editing, rehearsing, performing and more. Saturdays: 2-3:30pm

Voice

Learn about the voice as an instrument, the fundamental techniques of singing, and harmony—all while building a joyful community through music. Saturdays: 11:00am-12:00pm
