After-Party Will Include Special Performance by MUNA and DJ Sets by Romy and Coco & Breezy

The Museum of Modern Art’s annual Party in the Garden will honor artists Barbara Chase-Riboud and Ed Ruscha, as well as philanthropist and MoMA trustee Marlene Hess, and civic and philanthropic leader Darren Walker, on June 6, 2023. The After-Party, which will take place in MoMA’s Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden and The Modern, will be highlighted by a special performance by MUNA and DJ sets by Romy and Coco & Breezy. Both events benefit MoMA’s general operating fund, supporting its award-winning education programs and the care, study, and exhibition of the Museum’s collection. Details on purchasing Party in the Garden tickets and tables and After-Party tickets are available online.

Honorees

Barbara Chase-Riboud is a boundary-breaking visual artist, sculptor, and poet whose pioneering work helped shape the field of sculpture during the 20th and 21st centuries. The Encounter: Barbara Chase-Riboud/Alberto Giacometti, which includes several rarely seen sculptures, is on view at MoMA through October 9, 2023. Ed Ruscha is one of the most influential figures in postwar American art, consistently exploring the subject of language for over six decades. ED RUSCHA / NOW THENthe most comprehensive presentation of the artist’s work and his first solo exhibition at MoMA, will be on view from September 10, 2023, through January 13, 2024.

Marlene Hess’s decades-long philanthropic efforts have had a long-lasting and transformative positive impact on cultural organizations across New York City. A trustee and the current vice chair of The Museum of Modern Art’s board, she has also served as chair of the Drawing and Prints Committee, and as a member of the Finance and Painting and Sculpture committees. Darren Walker has served as president of the Ford Foundation for 10 years, where he continues to be a driving force in creating an equitable society through the support of major philanthropic missions, focusing on civil rights, community building, and social justice.

Performances

MUNA is comprised of Katie Gavin, Naomi McPherson, and Josette Maskin. MUNA, the band’s self-titled third album, was released to critical acclaim in 2022 and included the queer anthem “Silk Chiffon,” featuring the band’s then-new label head Phoebe Bridgers.

The band just released their new single “One That Got Away,” and they are currently on a sold-out US headline tour that includes an appearance at Coachella and stadium dates with Taylor Swift. The band will also be playing upcoming festivals such as Bonnaroo, All Things Go, Reading, and Leeds, as well as European dates with boygenius.

Romy Madley Croft is a musician, songwriter, and DJ. First coming to prominence as one- third of The xx, her debut solo singles “Lifetime” and “Strong” have achieved widespread acclaim. In 2023, she will release a debut album featuring production with Fred again.. and Stuart Price. As part of her songwriting portfolio, Romy has co-written each of The xx’s three acclaimed albums, Dua Lipa’s Grammy-winning hit single “Electricity” with Mark Ronson and Diplo’s Silk City, plus songs for King Princess and Halsey, among others.

Coco & Breezy are twin producers, DJs, and designers. Their musical journey was influenced by their family, and after moving to New York to launch their eyewear company, C&B immersed themselves in dance music and becoming technically accomplished Afro- Latina women DJs and producers. Their single “Just Say” has reached over 13 million streams and has remained on the top dance charts for months after being released. Recent performances include Coachella DO LAB & Heineken House, EDC Las Vegas and Orlando, and Lightning in a Bottle, with more to be announced.
