Mingus Big Band Residency at Drom
Two Sets Every Monday
7:30pm & 9:30pm
at Drom
$30 Advance / $35 Door
The Mingus Big Band performs and pays homage to the music of composer/bassist Charles Mingus, who celebrated his Centennial year in 2022. The band was founded under the artistic direction of Sue Mingus in 1991 to build off the Mingus Dynasty septet that she formed after Mingus’ death in 1979. This 14-piece band features new arrangements of Mingus compositions in a larger band format that Mingus was not always able to organize in his lifetime. The dynamic structure encourages deep explorations and ever-evolving ideations of Mingus Music and provides a platform for individual artistic expression. Time Out New York called them “the hippest big band in the universe – robust, earthy, sanctified.”
Drawing from a rotation of the best established and rising musicians, the Mingus Big Band is highly sought-after by festivals and prestigious venues around the world. The band has Grammy nominations spread over eleven recordings, including the Grammy-winning album Live at Jazz Standard. A new album, The Charles Mingus Centennial Sessions, was released in October 2022. The second volume will be released later this year.
The band has held down a weekly residency in New York City for three decades, beginning in 1991 Thursday nights at Fez under Time Cafe, then Joe’s Pub, City Hall, Iridium, and landing finally at Jazz Standard.
Mingus Big Band manager Robert Ungaro stated, “We are thrilled to partner again with Seth Abramson for Mingus Mondays — we shared 15 years at Jazz Standard (and a Grammy!). And back in Mingus’ old Village stomping grounds with the wonderful team at Drom. In this Centennial year, Mingus’ music and message is more essential than ever, as we showcase the talents of the best veteran and young musicians, striving to promote racial, gender and generational diversity. We are keeping the music of Mingus alive.”
Doors for Monday sets are 7pm and 9pm; combo tickets for both 7:30pm and 9:30pm sets are available for $45.
About Drom
Founded by two immigrant business entrepreneurs, Drom’s mission is to celebrate cultural diversity in the performing arts field by providing a physical space for artists from around the world to present their music, art and creative experiments. We live by our motto, #DromIsHome. From our nest in downtown Manhattan, we bring together a local and global community of like-minded individuals to share art and culture that transcend genre, class, race, and geography. Drom’s programs span diverse artistic forms including music, dance, theater, comedy and its stage is open to the next generation, as well as established performers.
From the Romani Gypsy language, “drom” translates into English as roughly “the journey.” When Turkish entrepreneurs Serdar Ilhan and Ekmel Anda opened the club in 2007, they hoped to create a meaningful hub for both artist’s and audience’s journeys reflecting the cultural diversity found in its programs. Whether they are local or travel thousands of miles from other continents, Drom hosts showcase year-round to introduce new and undiscovered talent. Some of the esteemed performers who have graced the Drom stage include Grammy-winners Robert Glasper, Snarky Puppy, Questlove, Gregory Porter and Hilary Hahn, as well as Camilla Cabello, Gloria Gaynor, Rakim, J Cole, Austin Mahone, Olly Murs, Ibrahim Maalouf, Marc Ribot, James Galway, Al di Meola, Brooklyn Funk Essentials and many more. The Wall Street Journal calls Drom “New York’s premiere venue for world music.”
