Iconic Cinematographer Roger Deakins Visits 92NY
A Conversation with Reel Pieces Moderator Annette Insdorf, Clips from Deakins’ Films and a Book Signing

Acclaimed cinematographer Sir Roger A. Deakins visits the 92nd Street Y, New York on Wednesday, May 17 at 7:30 pm. He will discuss his remarkable career with 92NY Reel Pieces moderator Annette Insdorf in a conversation that will include clips. He will be joined by his wife and Team Deakins partner James Deakins.
Afterwards, Deakins will sign copies of the book, Byways – a collection of his black-and-white photographs published by Damiani – that will be available for purchase.
Roger Deakins’ body of work includes The Shawshank Redemption, Kundun, Dead Man Walking, Fargo, No Country for Old Men, The Big Lebowski, (among several Coen Brothers films), Skyfall, A Beautiful Mind, The Reader, Doubt, Sicario, Blade Runner 2049, 1917 and Empire of Light.
Deakins has been nominated 16 times for an Academy Award, and won twice – for the movies 1917 and Blade Runner 2049. He has also been nominated 17 times for the top award of the American Society of Cinematographers, and 11 times for the BAFTA award. He is the only cinematographer to have been awarded the CBE (Order of The British Empire, 2013) as well as receiving the honor of knighthood in 2021.
Annette Insdorf is the longtime moderator of 92Y’s signature film series, Reel Pieces, as well as a Columbia University Film professor. As Reel Pieces moderator, she has been bringing New York audiences the best in film for over 30 years, including previews of Oscar Best Picture winners Spotlight and Birdman, and conversations with Francis Ford Coppola, Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Steve Carell, Natalie Portman, Hugh Jackman and Angelina Jolie. Her latest book is Cinematic Overtures: How to Read Opening Scenes . She was awarded the 2021 Telluride Film Festival’s Special Medallion, given to “unsung heroes of cinema.”
