April 20 – May 18, 2023

Opening reception: April 20th, 5-8pm

Hutchinson Modern & Contemporary is pleased to present Marcia Grostein: ex•cur•sions, a solo exhibition of work spanning from Grostein’s early career to recent works. From painting to video, sculpture to works on paper, from photography to functional art, Grostein’s energy and range is on display. She invites us to enter her world of exploration, revealing an oeuvre, practice, and spirit born from a desire to remain in motion.

Born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1949 to a Polish father and a Russian mother, Marcia Grostein came on to the New York City art scene in the late 1970s. It was in the explosive, “anything is possible” era of the NYC art scene of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s that Grostein found her footing and began making a name for herself.

Highly tactile and inspired by dance, Grostein’s practice stems from a need to continuously carve out a place for herself. “My work is all about intuition … I am always changing, reworking and moving”. In this way, her work is playful and spontaneous as she moves from one medium to another. ex•cur•sions includes paintings, works on paper, photography, sculpture and video ranging from the 1980s to 2023.

Today, Grostein lives and works in New York City. Her works are included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museu de arte de São Paulo, MoMA PS1, and the Museu de Arte Moderna do Río de Janeiro among others. Grostein has exhibited widely, included in the Biennials of Havana, 1984 (curated by Luis Camnitzer) and 1986, Venice, 1988, São Paulo, 1987 (curated by Sheila Leirner) and 1994 (curated by Nelson Aguilar), and Mercosul, 1999 (curated by Fábio Magalhães), as well as exhibitions at Exit Art (2008), PK Shop at Paul Kasmin gallery (2014), and more.
