Premiering a film in theaters is perhaps the most exciting moment for any film producer, and perhaps this is even more impactful for us independent producers, as perhaps many times we finance our own projects.
And in this case, the movie “Sou do Mar – A Historia de Mais um Amante do Surf” (“Sou do Mar – The Story of Another Surf Lover”) was exciting, for a few different reasons.

In 2020 I would be completing 25 years of photography, a very significant date and I had planned to make a commemorative video. But with the rush of the day and the high volume of work, I ended up not being able to do anything,
When the pandemic came and the lockdown in 2021, that’s when I had the opportunity to start editing this project. And most of the interviews I had already captured and the images were in my archive since the beginning of my career.
The initial idea was to make a video of approximately 10 minutes, maybe 15 at the most, but the final project ended up with 75 minutes.
A film that portrays a little bit of how people fall in love with surfing and how some of them ended up deciding to go and live on the North Shore of the island of Oahu, which is considered by many to be the mecca and paradise of surfing.
In my case, my love for the sport was so much that I ended up getting involved with surf photography in order to continue being as close as possible to the beach and the waves.
The film portrays the beginning of my life in Hawaii where without many resources I ended up living on the beach and with a lot of determination and dedication I managed to establish myself among the best surf photographers in the region.

The impression I had during this preview in Rio de Janeiro was that somehow the audience identified a lot with the story and script of the film. Because It’s a movie that talks about going after your dreams of overcoming obstacles of persisting until you achieve your goal so these are the messages that more than ever nowadays people want to be hearing and automatically identify with it.
Among the guests at the premiere were some friends of mine for many years who happen to be some of the best surfers in Rio de Janeiro, which is one of the biggest surf cities in the world.
We managed to fill up Botafogo’s net station, one of the largest cinemas in the state of Rio with about 250 seats. And nowadays with most movies being made for study in me it was great to have the opportunity to see a surf movie on the big screen in a crowded cinema, it was one of the best experiences of my life!
