Local Ensemble of Musicians of Color to Perform a Juneteenth Celebration of Classical Music by Black Composers in the Empire State Building
The Unsung Collective, a community-based music ensemble of people of color devoted to celebrating stories of the Black experience, will perform a Juneteenth celebration to commemorate the effective end of slavery in the United States.
The choir and orchestra will perform four pieces of classical music by Black composers to celebrate Black culture and support making Juneteenth a national holiday.
Juneteenth marks the day of emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S. In Texas, there were approximately 250,000 people still enslaved two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1862. On June 19th, 1865, Union Army general Gordon Granger went to Galveston, Texas to read General Order No. 3 which proclaimed freedom from slavery in Texas. For over 150 years, Black people in the U.S. have celebrated June 19th as a day of freedom and liberation from bondage.

The Unsung Collective is directed by Tyrone Clinton Jr., an accomplished conductor and educator. Through contemporary choral music, The Unsung navigates countless stories that are the true fabric of historical and current events. The Unsung is comprised of members from the New York City area and designed to stretch the confines of music of the Western canon.
