City of New York Proclaims January 31 as “Hello Deli Day”

City officials gathered to give Hello Deli, a long-standing, Asian-American owned small business in the theatre district, made famous by its proximity to the Ed Sullivan Theatre and recurring segments on The Late Show, a Proclamation from the Mayor of New York in honor of its 30th anniversary. Band leader and musician Paul Shaffer from The Late Show with David Letterman, plus others from the neighborhood and entertainment community, joined to celebrate the milestone!

“We are here to celebrate this iconic small business, Hello Deli, which has been a cornerstone of this community for three decades, said Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer. “Small businesses are the heart and soul of our neighborhoods and our city, and Mayor Adams’ administration will do everything possible to support small businesses to accelerate the city’s economic recovery.”

“While Rupert’s antics with Dave on The Late Show might have been the catalyst for Hello Deli’s notoriety, what really gives this place its star power are Rupert and May’s warm hospitality and strong connections to the local community they have cultivated for three decades,” said the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment Commissioner Anne del Castillo. “Hello Deli is a shining example of small businesses that have benefited from and contribute to NYC’s entertainment industry, which generates over $150B in economic impact and nearly a half a million jobs for New Yorkers.”

The Late Show staff worked here with Rupert and May for 20 years. To drop into Hello Deli was a daily tradition, and they always cheered us up and got us in the mood to deliver a great show. This is an honor so well deserved,” said musician Paul Shaffer.

“May and I at Hello Deli are honored to receive this proclamation from the City of New York. We feel deeply fortunate to be a part of this midtown neighborhood and the entertainment community, and we have taken great joy in supporting them both these many years,” said Hello Deli owner Rupert Jee.

Hello Deli is run by business partners Rupert Jee and May Chin. Hello Deli can be found at 213 W 53rd Street, Manhattan, and online at hello-deli.com.
