Stop No.2 on the 2021 Challenger Series, the MEO Vissla Pro Ericeira is on Standby. A lay day has been called due to small swell on the opening day of the waiting period.
“It looks like we have heaps of swell on tap for this window of competition,” Travis Logie, Senior Manager, Tours & Competition said. “Today is the smallest day so we’ve decided to call competition off for the day and we’ll reconvene tomorrow at 7:35 a.m.”
The Challenger Series are well and truly underway after an exciting opening event in Huntington Beach last week, marked by the victories of Americans Caity Simmers and Griffin Colapinto.
The condensed four-stop series has now landed in Ericeira, Portugal where a talented field is set to take on the powerful rights of Ribeira d’Ilhas.
Colapinto and compatriot Gabriela Bryan lead the fields with an army of talent in the hunt for a coveted spot among the men’s Top 12 and women’s Top 6, to qualify for the 2022 Championship Tour.
A mix of current CT athletes, perennial QS threats and young guns are all equally excited to take their battles to Europe where great conditions are likely on offer this time of year.
When competition gets underway, World No.14 Deivid Silva (BRA) will take on Marco Giorgi (URY), Tristan Guilbaud (FRA) and Vicente Romero (ESP) in Heat 1 of the men’s Round of 96.
Keely Andrew (AUS) will face off against Leilani McGonagle (CRI), Amuro Tsuzuki (JPN) and Sophia Medina (BRA) in the women’s Round of 64 opening heat.
The next call will be at 7:35 a.m (WEST), Sunday, October 2, 2021.
