Artist brings idea to life in 16 hours ahead of Red Bull Rubik’s Cube World Cup.
Full-time Rubik’s Cube artist Giovanni Contardi created the biggest mosaic that he has ever done to celebrate the upcoming Red Bull Rubik’s Cube World Cup, which will be held on the 40th anniversary of the game’s invention. Here is all you need to know:
– The first Rubik’s Cube portrait that Contardi sold of singer Amy Winehouse was for about $5,000 with his other portraits – using the six-sided puzzle made up of white, red, blue, orange, green and yellow squares – now going for 10s of thousands of dollars worldwide.
– The Italian said: “This mosaic is very special for different reasons. First, it is not a portrait and, second, it is 6,111 Rubik’s Cubes which is the biggest one ever done in less than 24 hours. It took me about 16 hours and the hardest part was staying focused for this whole time and, of course, enduring the pain on my legs.”
– Contardi – who finished second in the World Rubik’s Cube Championship in 2011 and has 331,000 followers on Instagram – had to manipulate each Rubik’s Cube carefully to produce the mosaic ahead of the Red Bull Rubik’s Cube World Cup on Saturday, November 7.
– He added: “I learned how to solve a Rubik’s Cube in 2009. I have achieved over 60 national records, nine European records and three world records. I didn’t invent this form of art, but I have found my own way and been lucky enough to have it become my job.”
– More than 2,000 hopefuls have been whittled down to the world’s 30 fastest cubers ahead of the virtual final.
– Finalists won’t even have to leave their homes to take part. They will be equipped with an innovative, fully digital Rubik’s Connected Cube, which tracks players’ turns and solves via an app.
