The Round of 16 heats for the women and men will implement the overlapping format.

“We’ve got great swell here this morning and we are on starting at 7:35 a.m. CDT,” said Jessi Miley-Dyer, WSL SVP of Tours and Head of Competition. “We will start with the women’s and men’s Round of 16, utilizing the overlapping format. Then, we will move into the women’s and men’s Quarterfinals. The Quarterfinals will not overlap. We look forward to another big day of competition here at Barra de la Cruz.”

Up first this morning will be current World No. 2 Johanne Defay (FRA) against World No. 15 Brisa Hennessy (CRI). Defay is battling to secure her place in the WSL Final 5 for a shot at the 2021 World Title, while Hennessy needs a strong result in Mexico to requalify for the next season of the CT.

Heat 4 will witness an intense matchup between current World No. 9 Courtney Conlogue (USA) and No. 10 Keely Andrew (AUS). In the fight for requalification to the elite CT, only one surfer will advance and better their position on the WSL Leaderboard

World’s Best Surfers Join Quiksilver Icons of Surf Super Session

After the competition wrapped for the day yesterday in Barra de la Cruz, some of the world’s best surfers joined Quiksilver for an expression session riding iconic surfboards that have helped shape the future of surfing in one way or another.

Ryan Callinan (AUS), Mikey Wright (AUS), Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), Caroline Marks (USA), Owen Wright (AUS), Tatiana Weston-Webb (BRA), Mateus Herdy (BRA), and Leah Dawson (HAW) got to battle in a one 40-minute heat format where judges picked one male and one female winner based on overall performance.

The winners of the Quiksilver Icons of Surf Super Session were Mikey Wright and Caroline Marks. Wright rode a remake of the board used by Andy Irons when he won the last CT event in Mexico 15 years ago, while Marks rode a Gerry Lopez Single.
