2020 has been a challenging year: a dogged fight for civic and political change; unprecedented protests in the face of injustice; an ever-worsening series of pandemics. For those at the intersections of multiple identities – particularly the Queer, Trans, and Black communities – survival requires a deep sense of fortitude, resilience, and love. As we take stock of where we’ve been and where we’re going, what does it mean to make space for our full humanity in times of crisis – to truly be seen?
Inspired by the ten-part podcast BEING SEEN, we’ll answer this question by taking our lead from the beauty and resilience of the queer Black experience. Featuring a keynote speech with Hari Ziyad (they/them), the editor-in-chief of RaceBaitr and author of the upcoming memoir Black Boy Out of Time; an interview with author, activist and auteur Darnell Moore (he/him); and music by singer, songwriter, artist and activist Mykal Kilgore (he/him).

Hari Ziyad is a cultural critic, a screenwriter, the editor-in-chief of RaceBaitr, and the author of Black Boy Out of Time. They are a 2021 Lambda Literary Fellow, and their writing has been featured in BuzzFeed, Out, The Guardian, Paste magazine, and the academic journal Critical Ethnic Studies, among other publications. Previously they were the managing editor of the Black Youth Project and a script consultant on the television series David Makes Man. Hari spends their all-too-rare free time trying to get their friends to give the latest generation of R & B starlets a chance and attempting to entertain their always very unbothered pit bull mix, Khione. Darnell L. Moore is Editor-at-Large at CASSIUS (an iOne digital platform) and formerly a senior editor and correspondent at Mic. He is co-managing editor at The Feminist Wire and an editor of The Feminist Wire Books (a series of University of Arizona Press). He is also a writer-in-residence at the Center on African American Religion, Sexual Politics and Social Justice at Columbia University. Being Seen is an in-depth exploration of culture’s role in resolving the tension between how we are seen and how we see ourselves. Focused on the gay and queer Black male experience, the first season is a space to explore current cultural representations and their impact through conversations with leading artists, writers, activists, entertainers, and community leaders. If we create nuanced and accurate cultural portrayals of identity and experience, we have an opportunity to reduce stigma and change perception – impacting everything from HIV to institutional inequality. Being Seen was produced by Harley & Co. and Darnell Moore and created in partnership with ViiV Healthcare.
